BBC Radio WM (28th April 2003)

On April 28th BBC Radio WM phoned me to do a short interview with Paul Franks to talk about 3-wheelers.com reaching 200,000 hits.  Before the interview a caller had mentioned that Cannock was a far better place than Tamworth which was a subject that started the interview. The interview took 4.5 minutes.

PF - Paul Franks.  EP - Elvis Payne

PF

The Reliant Robin, Remember it? Thousands of people love them; including Del Boy of course.  The 3-wheeler made famous by Fools and Horses, its got its own web site and believe it or believe it not this web site for the Reliant Robin has attracted 200,000 hits in two years. The man behind it is Elvis Payne - and guess where he’s from?  He’s from Tamworth because the Reliant Robin was built close by.  Lets talk to him. Hello Elvis.

EP

Hello there.

PF

So Tamworth, if we are extolling the virtues of Tamworth against Cannock ..

EP

Its a grand place

PF

Well the Reliant Robin for a start

EP

Definately - But should we admit that though?

PF

Yeah I think so, I mean, Reliant built cars in Tamworth including the Robin. People have still got them, I’m sure there are thousands of people who still own them. Maybe they don’t drive them on the roads anymore, maybe they have them in lock up garages all across the country - and probably all over the world. Youv’e had 200,000 hits on this web site you have developed in two years yeah?

EP

Thats right yes

PF

Why the obsession do you think?

EP

I believe its just like British excentrism in a way. Its one of those things we all laugh at and yet the interest is there as well. People always think of Reliant as 3-wheelers and they always think of only Reliant but in fact there are thousands of different makes.

PF

Yeah - Whats so special about the car for you Elvis that wanted to make you set up a web site if you like.

EP

To be honest its Tamworth, its Tamworth history as well for me but when I was at university I used to have a motorbike and that was stolen so I brought a Reliant Robin because then on a motorbike license you could drive a Reliant.

PF

Have you still got one or not?

EP

I havn’t Im afraid, Im looking for one though, I’d like a Del Boy one.

PF

Laughs

EP

But they cost thousands now you know

PF

Well, thats the thing, some of them I guess, and Im only guessing, are going up in value now.

EP

Its crazy, I mean if you try and buy a Reliant Regal, just a really old caputt one, your looking at about a thousand pound for one. Its crazy.

PF

Anybody got a Reliant Regal? If your a Reliant Robin owner phone the show. Have you been suprised about the number of hits your web site has had?

EP

I am actually yes, at first it was a bit if fun sort of photos from university; and then my friends started laughing saying 10 hits  - your be lucky to get that if your honest ....

PF

Laughs

EP

... Buts its actually amazing. The sites progressed now, and its like an A-Z of all 3-wheelers from all over the world.

PF

Right so its not just the Reliant Robin anymore, you’ve developed it.

EP

Thats right. Theres a big section on Reliant ...

PF

Right

EP

... and theres about 540 different manufacturers as well.

PF

So ... 540 3-wheelers are there?

EP

Well on my site there is but in the UK, well in the World theres probably about 1,200.

PF

What are the other most notable 3-wheelers that you have on your site?

EP

I guess you’ve got the Bond

PF

The Bond, yeah the Bond Buggy

EP

And then you’ve got modern ones like Triking which are still made in the UK and Grinnall. I guess BSA 3-wheelers from the olden days, the Coventry Victor, to be honest I could just go on and on.

PF

Erm,you might get a few more hits tonight, whats the web site address Elvis?

EP

Its www.3-wheelers.com thats three dash wheelers

PF

www dot three dash wheelers dot com

EP

Thats right yes

PF

Listen, I wish you every success

EP

Thank you

PF

Keep on Rolling

EP

Thank you

PF
