Russian KMZ K-1BDescriptionRussian KMZ K-1B Invalid CarriageThe KMZ motorcycle factory (Киевский мотоциклетный завод) in Kiev was established in 1945. Click here for a newsletter post Harry Kraemer did on Russian vehicles Factory started production of the motorcycle "Kievljanin“ K1-B, the base model (Wanderer 1-SP) of which was confiscated from the Germans as reparations. At first, motorcycles were produced in cooperation between two countries, but already in 1947, Kiev started independent series production of "Kievljanin“ motorcycles. At the end of 1946, preparations began for releasing the first three-wheel motorcycle K1-B for disabled persons in the Soviet Union. Three years later KMZ started production of the heavy motorcycle M72. In 1956, KMZ introduced an improved model M-72N. It was supplied with a new front swingarm, hubs, windshields, rear-view mirrors, factory markings and rubber knee pads on the tank. In 1958, the new model K-750 was put into production, which had 26 hp (4 more than M72) due to higher level of compression. In 1964, KMZ introduced an improved model K-750M, a military model MV-750 with differential two-wheel drive to the sidecar wheel and the sports model K-750SM. During 1956-1970 the production of motorcycles increased to 45-50 000 units per year. In 1967, KMZ started producing the model K-650 „Dnepr“ with 649 ccm overhead-valve engine and the military model MV-650M. Improvements of the model Dnepr MT9, which was first introduced in 1972, included a new gearbox with a reverse gear. MT10 became the first "Dnepr“ with 12V electrical system. The new model included larger fuel tank and long double seat. In 1978, the first batch out of 25 special escort motorcycles were produced for Kremlin. Strict technical specifications satisfied the demanding client. This 50 hp motorcycle with special tyres can be driven even on slippery winter roads at speeds of up to 130 km/h. These motorcycles had an electrical ignition - starter, that ensured flawless ignition even at the temperature of -40°C. This batch was sent to Moscow in 1983. The Ministry of Defence of the Soviet Union made a proposition to Izhmash to start producing these high class motorcycles in Russia as well, but they did not succeed. Great experiences and knowledge of the constructors in Kiev proved to be insuperable and met the constantly growing high requirements of the Kremlin officials. Last batch of this superb technological achievement was produced in 1989. In 1991, the first batch of solo motorcycles with 650 ccm engines were released. Detailed Information
